Microneedling Before and After

Microneedling TLC: a guide to preparing for your appointment and optimizing your skin's recovery

At Moraga Wellness Studio, microneedling has become a popular service, with benefits across a variety of skin concerns, from wrinkles and fine lines to scars and hyperpigmentation. This minimally invasive procedure creates tiny controlled punctures in the skin, triggering the body's natural healing response to boost collagen production and improve overall skin texture.

Here are some tips on what to avoid in the few days before and after your appointment.

Before your appointment

In the week before your appointment, avoid using skincare ingredients that will make skin more sensitive and prone to redness, including:

  • retinoids

  • acids including Hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid and salicylic acid (AHAs and BHAs may be listed in ingredients- these are acronyms for acids and should be avoided)

  • other exfoliating agents like jojoba beads, fruit extracts, or bamboo extract

Also avoid taking any blood thinners in the week prior to your appointment, as bruising, though uncommon, can be a side effect of treatment.

Do not have a laser/IPL treatment for at least 2 weeks before microneedling, and of course take extra care with sun protection before and after treatment.

After treatment

The first 24 hours: minimizing discomfort and promoting healing

The initial 24 hours after microneedling are crucial for setting the stage for proper healing. Here's how to navigate this delicate period:

  • Minimize contact: Your skin is in a vulnerable state with open channels. Avoid touching your face throughout the day to prevent the transfer of bacteria. Wash your hands thoroughly before cleansing your face as instructed by your practitioner.

  • Skip the makeup: Hold off on applying makeup for at least 24 hours, ideally longer if your skin feels particularly sensitive. Makeup brushes and sponges can harbor bacteria, increasing the risk of irritation and infection.

  • Sun protection is paramount: Sun exposure is the enemy of healing skin. Apply a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher religiously every day, even on cloudy days. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially if you're outdoors. Consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat for added protection.

  • Your post-treatment skincare routine: after your initial microneedling treatment, we will give you a set of vegan, cruelty-free skincare products that you may use in the days after your facial, with instructions on when to use them. They include a bio-regenerative hydrating oil, gentle cleanser and exfoliant. (The exfoliant is not to be used within a week of your microneedling treatment.)

Beyond the First Day: Nurturing Your Skin Back to Health

As the initial redness and sensitivity subside, continue to prioritize gentle skincare practices for optimal recovery:

  • Maintain a gentle cleansing routine: Stick to your fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water for at least a week after the treatment. Avoid harsh scrubbing or rubbing your face.

  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: Continue using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer throughout the day and night to keep your skin hydrated and support the healing process.

  • Patience is key: Visible results from microneedling typically take 4-6 weeks to become fully apparent. Be patient and continue with your gentle skincare routine to allow your skin time to heal and produce new collagen.

Skincare ingredients to avoid after microneedling:

In the days following your appointment, your skin will be extra sensitive, and it is important to be mindful of certain skincare ingredients that can hinder the healing process or exacerbate irritation:

  • Retinol and Retinoids: These powerful ingredients promote cell turnover and can be very irritating to freshly treated skin. Avoid using retinol or retinoid products for at least a week after your treatment, or as instructed by your practitioner.

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs): Similar to retinol, AHAs and BHAs can be too harsh for post-microneedling skin. These exfoliating acids can cause further irritation and dryness. Wait at least a week before reintroducing these ingredients to your routine.

lf you have any questions about your products and when they are okay to resume use after treatment, consult with your provider.
